Linux Kernel Mentorship Program Schedule

The LF Kernel Mentorship Program includes three 12-week, full-time volunteer mentee positions, and also two 24-week part-time volunteer mentee positions each year. The full-time mentee positions are offered in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. The part-time mentee position is offered in the Summer and Spring. The mentee positions are designed to give program participants exposure to at least two Kernel releases. The Kernel release cycle is 7-8 weeks.

Overall Mentorship timeline

  • Skill evaluation period - 2 weeks
  • Application Contribution period begins - 6 weeks
  • Review and selection process - 2 weeks
  • Contract and HR process - 2 weeks
  • Mentorship program - 12 weeks
  • Mentorship Part-time program - 24 weeks
  • Attending an event: a Project event scheduled after the mentorship program has ended
  • Write and publish a blog about your experience and the project you completed.

Mentor time commitment

Mentors should expect to spend one to two hours per week during the entire duration of the Mentorship Program starting from the application process to the end of the program.

Mentee Evaluations during the program

Mentees are required to submit their progress for evaluation. Report contributions for evaluation. There are 4 evaluations during the 12 weeks or 24 weeks. Reports are due as per the below schedule. In the interest of paying stipends more frequently, the evaluation schedule has change from 3 evaluations to 4 and 1/4 of the stipend is paid after each successful evaluation.   • Initial Stipend Payment: Mentee with successful Initial Evaluation will receive initial stipend (1/4 of total Stipend).
  • Second Stipend Payment: Mentees with successful Midterm Evaluation will receive the midterm stipend (1/4 of total Stipend).
  • Third Stipend Payment: Mentees with successful final evaluation will receive the final stipend (1/4 of total Stipend).
  • Final Stipend Payment: Mentees with successful final evaluation will receive the final stipend (1/4 of total Stipend).
  • Travel funds will be paid after attending a conference. Select a conference of your choice Linux Foundation Events. Discuss your conference choices with Shuah Khan
  • Shuah Khan will help with writing a blog and publishing.
