Google Summer of Code 2022

This is our list of project ideas for the Google Summer of Code program in 2022.

Note: GSoC will be different again, this time, for the 18th year of GSoC, there will be the following changes:

  • Contributors, not only students: From now on it is not required any more to be a university/college student to code for GSoC. Anyone 18 years old and older can do.
  • Two project sizes: 16 GSoCs with ~350-hour projects, then one with ~175-hour ptojects, some tasks fit better into one size others into the other, no one-size-fits-all. Now we can have both. The organizations can select from these two sizes for each project idea they offer.
  • Coding period flexibility: Before, there was a fixed time period of ~3 months in which the projects had to be done, also with fixed dates for the 2 or 3 evaluations. From 2022 on the period can be extended to 22 weeks on agreement between mentor and contributor, should there be some interruptions like exams, trips, sickness, different dates of mid-year break, … This gives more people the chance to be able to participate.

Now we have much more flexibility in defining projects and in selecting candidates, so much better chances in getting our projects done and finding more long-term contributors.

Dear contributors, if you want to apply for doing a Google Summer of Code project with us you can choose a project from our workgroup's lists but you can also present your own idea fitting to any of the work groups below. Please note that you have to choose “The Linux Foundation” as your mentoring organization, independent of the workgroup where you want to do your project.

Note: If you want to participate as contributor, you DO NOT need to be member of the GSOC group on the Linux Foundation web site, this group was formerly used for writing these pages and now it is not used any more.

Dates

  • March 7, 2022 - Accepted mentoring organizations will get announced
  • April 4, 2022 - Applications open for contributors
  • April 19, 2022 - Deadline for contributors to apply

Notes to take for contributors

Note: Many of the links come from Google Summer of Code programs of the past and also Google's own documentation for this year's edition is not yet completely updated. Therefore if you read the word “student”, consider this as “contributor”. No proof of enrollment at college or university is required.

  • Read the GSoC Manual, the timeline, and GSoC FAQs
  • On your application be sure to mention which of the listed Linux Foundation projects you are applying for, if applicable. If you are suggesting your own idea be sure to clarify that.
  • Follow the scheme of our contributor application template.
  • Follow the DOs and DON'Ts for contributors.
  • On the front page click the field to apply as a contributor and then choose “The Linux Foundation” as your mentoring organization from the long list. To find it, use the filter field under “Name” or use the drop-down menu at the bottom to display the full list (there are more than 150 organizations).

If you have questions

Do not hesitate to ask questions. Please use the contact info (e-mail, IRC) of the workgroup in which you want to do your project. You find it by following the links below. For general questions about participating as GSoC contributor in projects of the Linux Foundation, join the #linuxfoundation-gsoc channel on Libera.Chat.
