Following the meetings of academics, developers and users of real-time and embedded Linux at the previous 17 real-time Linux workshops held world-wide - the Real-Time Linux Workshop for 2017 will come back to the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, and is held from October 19th to 20th, 2017 followed by the Real-Time Linux Summit 2017, a discussion focused single track event on October 21st.

Real Time systems have evolved over the past decades in a relatively calm manner - performance has increased, one can say dramatically, but the main paradigms were pretty stable since the mid 80s. This has changed now. With the real-time PREEMPT_RT patch set moving into mainline there is nothing left to do - all problems solved… or not quite yet.

Developing a rigorous theory is important - relating these to reality is equally important. This is where CTU's research group has much experience to offer. The focus on system properties be it real-time or security and extending this into functional safety in the past years,form a good background for hosting this gathering of real-life systems developers.

Research interests of our host, Prof. Hanzalek and his group, focusses among others, on:

• Real-time networking algorithms
• Real-time systems
• Open-source (not “only” GNU/Linux)

FLOSS in embedded systems is well established, ranging from consumer electronics to network devices and increasingly industrial applications including safety related systems. The technological resources suitable for high-availability, real-time, and safety critical systems have been continuously expanding and improving - allowing to cover the entire development life cycle of industrial projects based on Open-Source tools.

At the core of this development is the availability of stable operating systems with reliable real-time properties. Extending and improving these real-time properties of open-source RTOS is continuous research and development effort that OSADL documents in the form of the annual Real Time Linux Workshop together with Linux Foundation's annual Real-Time Linux Summit.

The below call for paper exclusively refers to the Real Time Linux Workshop. The Real-Time Linux Summit is an add-on event to RTLWS held on Oct. 21st, focused on the real-time preemption patch set and the activities around it, which has a separate CFP.

Authors from regulatory bodies, academics, industry as well as the user-community are invited to submit original work dealing with general topics related to open-source and free-software based real-time systems research, experiments and case studies, as well as issues of integration of open-source real-time and embedded OS. A special focus will be on industrial case studies and safety related systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• FLOSS based real-time system solutions
• Modifications and variants of the GNU/Linux operating system extending its real-time capabilities
• Contributions to real-time Linux variants, drivers and extensions
• Tools for the verification and validation of real-time properties
• User-mode real-time concepts, implementation and experience
• Real-time Linux applications, in academia, research and industry
• Safety related FLOSS systems
• Work in progress reports, covering recent developments
• Educational material on real-time Linux
• RTOS core concepts, synchronization, IPC mechanisms or resource allocators.
• Analysis and Benchmarking methods and results of real-time FLOSS and GNU/Linux variants including comparisons
• Debugging techniques and tools, both for code and temporal debugging of core RTOS components, drivers and real-time applications
• Real-time related extensions to development environments
• Real-time and virtualization

We invite you to either submit an abstract as proposal for a Work-in-Progress (WiP) or an abstract as proposal for a full paper. Authors of WiP presentations will get the opportunity to present their work in a 30-minute talk, authors of a full paper will be awarded with a 60-minute time slot. When submitting an abstract as proposal for a full paper authors confirm that they are willing to prepare a paper adhering to the form defined by the paper template upon acceptance of the proposal and to submit it meeting the paper submission deadline given below. A detailed description of the editing and formatting process will be provided along with the acceptance notification email. The full paper will be included in the RTLWS18 proceedings.
