[edit] Minutes of Expert Handlers Conference Call 2009/02/23

NS: expert handlers requirements; feedback at AIA meeting from AISquared in regards ZoomText -- MathPlayer has synchronized interface, what if scrolls off screen due to high magnification -- what they do if it goes off screen is to follow it with focus; when highlight something, want to know what is being highlighted so can be re-scrolled -- expert handler need to know where the content is: this is the part being spoken, this is where it is at rectangle (windows based coordiniate system) -- should allow it to scroll back up the screen

JS: also good for music and has implications learning disabilities

JS: multi-modal output -- not just applicable to magnification

NS: conductor's score versus score for single instrument

JS: always need to be synchronized

NS: this should be included in our Use Cases as well as the Requirements Document document

GJR: if we can work out wording, will gladly issue a point version of UUC 1.0

ACTION: GJR & NS work on wording to be added to Requirements Document and Use Cases

VB: haven't yet reported on Genetic Markup Language

VB: either describe experimental devices developed in CERN; assume SVG -- object description possible; use is limited to a single group working in this field; not usable to us;

VB: object oriented description of specific area of inquiry; geometry of experimental nuclear physics; describe how complex engineering device works -- can run ; set of objects and specific properties

NS: candidate for Expert Handler is would you find this in a web page or in a document somewhere as opposed to a number of things explored which are more data-exchange formats;

VB: it is used for data input, but also can be made accessible for human consumption; have few objects and can get description from actual data file; not machine-readable; just simple categorization which are human readable descriptions

NS: like SVG -- don't necessarily want to describe whole but may need to navigate by part

VB: SVG much more primitive objects (cones, cylinders, blocks)

VB: extremely limited user base

GJR: wondering if taking the wrong approach; we gone out and grabbed whatever language sounded promising and seemed alive due to number; but what we need to do is find out are there any standards upon which online education is coalescing so we address the actual user scenarios;

NS: my gut feeling is there aren't any standards, but wouldn't hurt to check

VB: agree

JS: standards in terms of specific XML dialects?

GJR: yes, as well as other content delivery technologies actually being deployed

NS: yes, step back one step from XML -- most stuff is HTML plus images and aren't accessible;

NS: course management software -- what is being used what is

GJR: a lot of the content will probably be HTML plus images or PDF or other final format files

JS: worthy to double-check on; suspect NS and VB are correct

JS: Jamie's issue "trying to address what happens on application-by-application basis or what can be provided by a standard plug-in" mechanism; would like to move that discussion forward

ACTION: GJR - investigate whether there are standards around which online curricula are coalescing

JS: hopefully have something more permanent for phone bridge in place for next week's meeting, with a dial in number for Australia
