__**[[chaoss:metrics|<< Back to CHAOSS Metrics Committee]]**__ ====== Formation Meeting Minutes 2017-03-21 ====== ===== On call ===== (alphabetical by first name): * Brandon Keepers * Georg Link * Kate Stewart * Matt Germonprez We experienced technical issues with the conferencing system and switched to a different technology and started the meeting late. ===== Progress Report ===== * The email list is set up * Who is on the mailing list? * Only the people on the call - to be expanded next * The wiki is set up ===== Structure of Metrics ===== * We still need to flesh out the areas or categories of metrics * Peter Monks mentioned categories that resonate: Activity metrics / Viability metrics / Risk metrics * Matt and Sean Goggins are building out the metrics * What are the sources from which metrics can be generated? * How are the metrics related to each other, and how do they cluster around topics e.g. licensing or risk. ===== Ideas for structuring the Metrics Group ===== * Three specialized groups: * A metrics definition group * What are the metrics and how are they defined? * A standards group * What is the standard data format to share and consume metrics? * The technology is probably split into two parts: A metric generating part and a metric display part. Both parts need to exchange metrics. * Should collaborate with the Tooling Group * Tooling Group has implementation and database to use as a starting point for standard setting * A research and development group * How are metrics deployed, understood, or modified by users? * Individuals from university or others who are interested can engage in this group * Kate shared a masters thesis that might be interesting: https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/9866/e7502c3c2058c931a2658539959b39f085c1.pdf * The R&D group will be in charge of maintaining references like this ===== Bi-weekly meetings ===== * When should we coordinate bi-weekly general meetings? * Right now they are formation meetings. * The discussion on metrics should occur on the mailing lists until the working group is formalized. * After the working group is formalized, we will set up general meeting for the members of the working group. ===== Next Steps ===== * Waiting for governance documents from Mike Dolan * The Working Group will be one part of a larger working group: * A Tooling Group * A Metrics Group (this is group) * Waiting for the code group. * The governance will specify for example that the steering committee are the ones who are willing to put in the extra effort to maintain a code base or a document. * Work-rights on a document are commit rights equivalent to commit rights on code repositories * We do not expect a code base for the metrics group * Anyone who wants to be a member can sign the charter and be an officially listed member * All members can edit the wiki * Matt starts reaching out to more people to start the conversation * Let people know about the wiki and mailing list * Foster a discussion on the mailing list, maybe around unique or controversial metrics to get people interested and get the conversation going * Brandon edits the wiki page to make it more welcoming and turn it into the landing page of the Metrics Working Group
